Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Since her father's departure the family, it was looked after by her mother, grandmother and godparents. When she was a young girl Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional-compulsive disorder. Ford began to be attracted to acting as a teenager, and she joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after one week decided she didn't fit in. Ford was then able to apply for a spot at the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler who is a character that was recurring on Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993 but in the meantime she was already making her debut on television in an episode from 1991 of Surgical Spirit; she adopted the professional name "Catherine Tate". Tate was featured in a variety of television programmes like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning during the Nineties. Tate would also frequently work in theatre and eventually joined The Royal Shakespeare Company during its season between 2000 and 2001. Tate gained not long after her recognition for her stand-up comedies which were added to Tate's repertoire in 1996.
